Year of Establishment: 1992

About:
İzmir Institute of Technology (IZTECH) is one of the state universities in Turkey and one that was established in 1992 with a view to offering a high level of education and carrying out research in technological fields. The medium of education at IZTECH is English. It is the only Turkish ‘institute of technology’, which is the most advanced model of technical universities in today’s world. Having first started with graduate programs in 1994 in the center of İzmir, the faculties have been admitting students to undergraduate programs as well since 1998. By 1999, IZTECH gradually started moving to its campus area in Urla, near Gülbahçe village, from the center of İzmir, where it had functioned since its foundation. Our institute, covering approximately 3,500 hectares of land, has a closed area of about 132,000 square meters for educational and research activities and it is still developing. Our name “İzmir Yüksek Teknoloji Enstitüsü” is abbreviated as “İYTE” nationwide and as “IZTECH” in international contexts.
IZTECH offers both graduate and undergraduate education to students at Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Architecture and Graduate School of Engineering & Sciences.
At our Institute, educational and research activities are carried out in 14 undergraduate, 24 master’s and 19 doctorate programs with a total of 5,459 students, 3,896 of which are here for their undergraduate education. It should also be noted that 6 of the master’s and 4 of the doctorate programs are interdisciplinary.
All educational and research activities conform to international norms. With our student and project-based educational methods, our mission is to pave the way for contemporary individuals who will be able to produce the necessary technologies for their country with their creativity, research ability and success in team work. Graduates are highly appreciated both within the country and abroad and we can justifiably boast that they are admitted to top master’s programs with scholarships. Besides this, from very early years, our students are encouraged to study in fully equipped laboratories for their personal development in the related fields. So, it is no surprise that IZTECH has consistently been ranked as the first among the state universities in the University Satisfaction Survey of Turkey (abbreviated as TÜMA in Turkish) and in the Foreign Student Satisfaction Survey of Turkey (abbreviated as YÖMA in Turkish).
Currently, there are approximately 400 research projects supported by the State Planning Office (abbreviated as DPT in Turkish) and the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (abbreviated as TÜBİTAK in Turkish). Additionally, 734 research projects are backed by IZTECH Research Funds. Apart from the nationally funded projects, IZTECH is also quite strong in the international arena with its 17 completed and 8 ongoing European Union projects. Thus, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that IZTECH enriches the world science by contributing to universal knowledge.
IZTECH has been chosen by the European Union as one of the two EURAXESS Service Centers in Turkey. It should also been indicated that IZTECH is the only institution in Turkey which
has been accepted by the Europen Union to its Human Resources Strategy for Researchers (HRS4R) program. Finally, IZTECH has recently been selected as one of the 10 research universities by the Council of Higher Education (abbreviated as YÖK in Turkish).
Apart from this, in accordance with its mission to encourage production of high added value, IZTECH is also home to the İzmir Technology Development Zone, which has become synonymous with the IZTECH itself. Within this Zone, about 150 firms operate in their relevant fields, which gives our students the chance to both take part in the research and also serve their internships. In this way, they sometimes enjoy the privilege of making future work contacts or even start their professional lives by setting up their own businesses within the Zone.
